When performing a CAPWAP® analysis the following messages were displayed: “Warning: Not fully activated resistance” and “Totally activated resistance: XXX.” What do these messages mean?

The first message indicates that the maximum displacement of one or more soil elements was less than the quake. In short, the message appears when resistance has not been fully activated. When this happens the solution is unacceptable. This is because the soil element’s ultimate resistance, quake, or both were specified too high.

The message shows, in a table, the elements whose full resistance was not activated. Additionally, the table specifies the resistance value associated with the element (Rult), as well as its activated resistance (Ract). The activated resistance corresponds to the actual maximum displacement of the element. Should this happen, keep reducing the resistance and/or the quake. Continue reducing until the maximum displacement of the corresponding element becomes equal to or greater than the quake.

By selecting the check for proportional Ru and quake reduction box, the program will reduce the resistance and the quake by the same factor. The CAPWAP program helps maintain the resistance and quake ratio. Ultimately, it ensures the activation of full resistance. Note: This may result in different quakes for different shaft elements, which could suggest that the solution is a lower bound.
