Is it possible to test timber piles with PIT?
Yes, timber piles have been tested, mainly to try to verify length. Wave speed in timber is actually similar to concrete, although different piles may give different wave speeds. Wood piles are usually tapered, so there might be a gradual drift upward in the velocity signal. However, testing timber piles does not always result in definite answers so we always tell client that we may or may not get conclusive answers so he is warned of that possibility in advance. If the wooden piles are already part of an existing structure, the data becomes even more difficult and often impossible to interpret.
