How long does it take to perform Thermal Integrity Profiling (TIP) by the probe method?
Thermal Integrity Profiling is dependent on the size of the shaft (length & radius). An estimation of the testing duration can be made if the size is known. The thermal probe is lowered at a maximum rate of 0.5 feet per second and a minimum of 2 tests for each tube are required to confirm repeatability of the data. Therefore, a 4ft (1.2 m) diameter shaft, 100 feet (30 m) long with 4 access tubes will take approximately 30 minutes (without dewatering the tubes, see Q 1088). Dewatering will add to the time required for testing by the probe method and should be considered. The time to dewater a tube might be twice the time for testing the tube (tubes longer than 50 ft – 15 m - take even more time).
