Tomosonic Software

TomoSonic is a 3D tomography imaging tool that supplements the CHA output.

This analysis is useful in cases where CHA-W analysis reveals a defect but does not give a precise idea of its extent. TomoSonic helps visualize the defect in two or three dimensions.

The TomoSonic software combines arrival time data from the scans of all pairs of tubes. It then analyses these data and displays it in various views.

The USA Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) states that “Cross-hole sonic logging (...) has become the standard testing method within the Federal Highway and several State Departments of Transportation to characterize concrete structure integrity in drilled shaft piers.” However, “current full waveform and XY results are difficult to interpret, and are often ignored by the site project engineer”. FHWA proposes that “refining CSL data presentation with 3-D images will vastly improve concrete pier integrity characterization” resulting in the fact that CSL will “more likely be used by the site project engineer, ultimately minimizing risk and reducing costs.” FHWA then recommends: “The project specifications should be modified to include (…) three-dimensional tomographic images of the drilled shaft as a standard presentation to replace the current full waveform or XY plots of CSL results.”

    TomoSonic features:
  • User selected horizontal or vertical slices.
  • Display shaft surface, slices, or iso-velocity curves.
  • Display multiple shafts or multiple views per window.
  • Full color, 2 color, or black and white for user selected ranges.
  • Rotate or transform image instantly.
  • View whole pile or selected vertical sections.
  • Automatic calculation of percentage of section less than user selected velocity threshold.
